Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Thanks for sharing the endurance sample workout. For people that don't know a lot about power based training, where would this workout fit in the season? I know a lot of us now have been taking it easy lately but are now looking to get back into shape for the 2010 tri season.
A: An endurance workout is part of "base building" along with tempo and threshold workouts. Typically, these are done early in a progressive training program. Once an athlete has laid down a base then it's appropriate to work on building power using VO2 max, anaerobic, neuromuscular, etc. workouts. Even though the weather right now is not conducive to outdoor training, an athlete can take the training indoors and get a leg up on the outdoor season starting several months from now. The book, Training and Racing with a Power Meter, by Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan, is the BEST publication available on this topic.
Q: The Keiser is a well made piece of fitness equipment but its far from an authentic cycling position and I do not understand how anyone can say they can measure power or watts. They simply don't.
A: You are correct in that the M3 does not measure watts DIRECTLY. Power on a bike is a function of cadence and resistance and as you vary either on the M3 the watts change accordingly. We have compared the M3 to road bikes with Powertap on an indoor trainer and the watts displayed on each are approximately equal for the same rider and effort.
